Österlen, Skåne aug. 2009

The south-eastern part of Sweden, Österlen, is not a typical Swedish landscape. It’s more like East Møn in Denmark. Hills, cliffs and endless sand beaches. There are five “musts” to see in Österlen: Ales stenar, Hagestads national park at the very end of Sweden, Glimmingehus, Stenshuvuds national park and the hills at Brösinge.
Ales stenar (Stones) is Sweden's largest preserved "ship setting" - stones set in the layout of a ship. Nobody seems to know why it was built but its around 5500 years old and impressive as it lies on top of a round hill with a magnificent view over the Baltic sea. You can’t help to think of Stonehenge, when you are there.
Glimmingehus is the best-preserved medieval manor in Scandinavia. It was established in 1499 as an imposing residence for the Danish knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand and his family. At that time Skåne belonged to Denmark. Today it is museum.
